In May, Oakfield Wood bursts into life as a vibrant array of wildflowers emerges, creating a stunning natural tapestry. One of the most iconic sights is the bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta), which carpets the woodland floors with its enchanting blue hues. These delicate flowers thrive in ancient woodlands, often forming vast, breathtaking colonies that attract numerous visitors.
Another notable flower is the wild garlic (Allium ursinum), which fills the air with its unmistakable garlicky scent. Its star-shaped white flowers bloom in clusters, adding a lovely contrast to the lush greenery. Alongside wild garlic, you may also encounter the charming wood anemone (Anemone nemorosa), with its white petals and delicate yellow centers, often found in shaded areas.
The lesser celandine (Ficaria verna) is also prevalent, featuring glossy yellow flowers that brighten the woodland floor. As the month progresses, the vibrant purple of the foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) begins to appear, adding vertical interest to the landscape.
In addition, the hedgerows surrounding woodlands showcase blossoms from species like hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), which presents clusters of white or pink flowers, welcoming pollinators and enhancing the woodland's biodiversity.
As May unfolds, these flowers not only provide visual splendor but also play crucial roles in supporting local wildlife, marking a season of renewal and growth which those who lay there have become part of.
More and more people are choosing to go back to nature at the end of their lives. Becoming part of a protected natural habitat for nature, wildlife and birdlife offers families peace of mind and the reassurance that their loved ones will live on as part of something truly beautiful and teaming with life.
