Love & Care of Oakfield Wood Wrabness

Updated: 5 days ago

Winter Woodland TLC at Oakfield Wood Wrabness

An enormous amount of love and care is continually given to the trees and plants in Oakfield Woodland Burial Ground in Wrabness, Essex. The trees marking each burial plot are looked after very carefully, especially newly planted trees, which can be quite vulnerable for the first 3 years. Trees are so important – they provide habitat and food for birds and animals, they absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses, and they release oxygen for us all to breathe.

Ensuring the long term health of Oakfield Woodland is vitally important. Great care and consideration is taken to ensure that the most suitable species of trees and their placement with neighbouring trees are chosen. The most suitable tree type will be chosen, determined by its location, to allow and encourage the essential symbiosis and support between trees.

Winter is normally a great time to plant trees but this year planting has been delayed until January and February due to the warm weather.

In mature woodland many fungi species will be fruiting. During the cold season, after leaves fall, the brackets and toadstools of various fungi are easier to spot on the stems, crown and around the bases and roots of trees. Some are very beneficial to the trees but some are not and are removed to ensure that the health of each tree is maintained. There are many brambles, weeds, vines, and unwanted seedlings growing in all woods. These must be managed to allow room to plant and cultivate seedling trees that will be beneficial to the woodland. Invasive weeds and brambles are also managed to maintain an ideal environment for the many birds and wildlife who reside there.

Make time to go out and enjoy the stark, quiet beauty of the woods in winter. The cold weather and long nights can make it hard to spend time outdoors but it’s important to remember all the health benefits getting out can bring. Woodlands are fantastic for our physical and mental health and wellbeing and Oakfield Wood is no exception. It has a profound feeling of peace and its beautiful location along the gorgeous River Stour provides a truly healing space for everyone who visits.
